In E A Bowles and his Garden at Myddelton House 1865-1954, Allan gives us a fascinating insight into the life of Edward Augustus Bowles, one of Britain’s greatest gardeners. Brought up by a fun-loving father and garden-minded mother, Bowles was the youngest of three siblings. After receiving the devastating news that his brother and sister were dying from consumption, Bowles abandoned his plans of becoming a priest and returned home to Myddelton House. Here he created a magnificent garden, filled with many strange, rare and difficult plants – open to the public, click hereĀ  for more information on the garden.

Bowles was also a garden writer and botanical artist and many of his paintings are now held at the Lindley Library and Natural History Museum in London.

If you are visiting the RHS garden at Wisley, look out for Bowles Corner. This area commemorates Bowles who was a former President of the RHS and contains many unusual plants. A list of the plants is included in Appendix II of Allan’s book although this may now be out of date.
