Garden Style by Penelope Hobhouse. Frances Lincoln. Paperback 2002. Illustrated. 216pp. Slight wear to book edges with stain on last page otherwise in good condition.
Hobhouse has designed gardens all over the world and uses this book to illustrate how to lay out and plant formal, natural and flower gardens. She includes the Italianate Blake House garden at Berkeley, California to the gardens at Knightshayes in Devon and the garden room at La Pietra in Tuscany. Hobhouse explains how to relate a garden to its setting and the importance of establishing structure in the garden. There are also ideas on how to create a small garden.
Hobhouse taught herself gardening by studying the gardens in Tuscany. She designed the garden at Hadspen House in Somerset before it became The Newt. In 1980, she and her husband Professor John Malins moved to Tintinhull Gardens where she felt it was ‘her duty to restore the garden to its appearance in Mrs Reiss’s day.’ She has designed numerous gardens around the world and written several gardening books including Colour in Your Garden, Plants in Garden History and Penelope Hobhouse’s Natural Planting.
Hobhouse has received the Victoria Medal of Honour from the RHS and the UK Society of Garden Designers’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
