Roses and Rose Gardens

Roses and Rose Gardens by Claire Masset. 176pp Hardcover. Illustrated. Published by National Trust Books, 2019. Excellent condition.

A must for all rose lovers! With beautiful photographs by some of the world’s leading photographers, Claire divides the book into four parts. She begins by telling us about the fascinating history of the flower with Knossos in Crete having the earliest certain representation of a rose dating back 3,500 years and discusses how the rose’s rich symbolism has been representated in art and poetry.

The next part focuses on 20 varieties of rose in detail, including a description of the flower, why it makes a good choice, where you can grow it and suggestions on which plants to grow it with.

The third section explores fourteen rose gardens in detail from Helmingham Hall to two infamous rose gardens – one at Mottisfont (if you haven’t been, make sure you visit Mottisfont in June when the roses are at their best) and Sissinghurst Castle Garden.

The book concludes with ‘Simple Rose Care’.

Claire Masset is the author of the bestselling Secret Gardens of the National Trust as well as other books on gardens and social history. She currently works as publisher for the National Trust. She won the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors.
