The Garden at Chatsworth

The Garden at Chatsworth by the Duchess of Devonshire; Frances Lincoln, 1999

270 x 225 x 17; 192 pages; illustrated with photographs by Gary Rogers; hardback with dust jacket showing signs of wear but not torn.

An amusing tour of the gardens at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire by the late Duchess of Devonshire. The Duchess accompanies the reader on a walk through the gardens as well as telling us about the ‘story of the garden [which] is inextricably mixed with the story of the family.’

Deborah, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014) was the youngest and last-surviving of the six Mitford sisters. Known to her family and friends as Debo, she married Lord Andrew Cavendish, younger son of the 10th Duke of Devonshire, in 1941. When Cavendish’s older brother was killed in action in 1944, Cavendish became heir to the dukedom. He became the 11th Duke of Devonshire in 1950.

The Duchess wrote several books about Chatsworth and was involved with the restoration of the house and developing the gardens. Towards the end of her life, she made friends with Arthur Parkinson, bonding over their shared interest in gardening and hens.
