The Genius of Gardening

The Genius of Gardening by Christopher Thacker. Weidenfeld and Nicolson. Hardback 1994. Illustrated. 352pp. Slight wear to dustjacket at the head and tail but otherwise in very good condition.

A must read for any garden history lover, this book traces the development of garden design from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Thacker begins with the Romans, arguing that they ‘brought gardens’ to Britain. He then skips through the centuries, finishing with a few gardens of the 20th century including Ian Hamilton Finlay’s garden at Little Sparta in Scotland.

Christopher Thacker was one of the founding Trustees of the Garden Museum and Life Vice President of the Gardens Trust. He was also the first Inspector for the Register of Parks and Gardens of Historic Interest.
